Integrated Development Planning
The draft IDP's for the uThukela District Municipality and the Local Municipalities can be accessed here.
What is the Integrated Development Plan
All municipalities within South Africa need to go through a process in which they prepare a strategic development plan; from this the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) is produced.
The IDP is the primary planning mechanism which will guide and inform issues such as planning, budgeting and decision making.
The IDP is a legislative requirement (Municipal Systems Act of 2000), and therefore all Metro’s, Local and District Municipalities are required to embark on the process of integrated development planning.
What is the Lifespan of the I.D.P
Every new council which comes into office after the local elections has to prepare an IDP for 5 years, after which it is reviewed annually; it is thus linked to the councillor’s term in office.
The elected council may adopt the previous IDP or produce a new document, which needs to take into consideration existing planning documents.
To develop and IDP will take from 6 -9 months as interaction is sought from various stakeholders such as other municipalities within the District as well as Provincial Departments.
